Car ferry boat between Glenelg and Skye, Scotland

The frerry boat the Glenachulish is a living museum. Built in 1969, she is the last turntable ferry in operation and ploughing the route from Glenelg to Kylerhea in Skye. As the song says, "O'er the sea to skye." While today you can take the new bridge to Skye, there is something romantic about travelling the route by boat. The ferry is community owned and the service runs between March and October. Access to the ferry sight from the mainland is via the high mountain road that runs from Shiel Bridge to Glenelg. On the Skye side, and equally spectacular road links up with the centre of the island. Nearby the ferry are the remains of the 18th century fort built by General Wade. One of four forts built at that time in an attempt to control the unruly and rebellious Jacobites. Also nearby are two of the best preserved examples of an iron age building known as a Broch.
