Liaoning

Baiyan Goguryeo city

Old Goguryeo city wall in Yanzhou, Liaoyang, Liaoning, China. This city is called Baegam in Korean (Hangul :백암성, ) in Chinese it was Baiyan Cheng (白岩城) or formerly Shiraiwa City. It is in present-day Dengta Prefecture in Liaoyang.

The city dates to 403 AD. It is built on a hillside on a bend of the Taizi River. The river has eroded the south side of the hill creating steep cliffs forming a natural defensive area. The hill itself is bowl shaped with the depression opening to the south west. Around the ridge of the bowl were built high city walls. These are made of large stones placed dry, without mortar. The walls are 2 to 3 metres wide and up to 7 metres tall. Much of the original wall is still visible today. At regular spaces along the wall, square towers jut outwards.

The location was the scene of a great battle during the Tang dynasty of China. The Emperor Li Shimin in 465 AD attacked the Goguryeo. He first captured the city of Liaodong (today old Liaoyang) and then this city also fell.

Panjin

Located up in the north east of China, Panjin is not an obvious tourist destination, however, it is an area of outstanding natural beauty famous for it wildlife, especially birds and fish.

Panjin is on the northern coast of the Bohai Sea (Yellow Sea) in Liaoning Province of China. The main industry is oil: nodding donkeys can be seen throughout the country side. The city is at the mouth of the Taizi river which creates large mud flats. These are mostly covered in tall reids wich makes ideal territory for many types of birds. At the edge of the reids, an unusual plan is found that has a bright red colou. This gives the area the name Red Beach. This mud flat habitat is unique to Panjin and so the area as a National Nature Reserver and National Park.

Being a coastal city, Panjin has a good supply of fresh fish. Of particular note are the local Hairy Armed Crabs.
